Dipsaci Radix (Xu Duan) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Also known as “Monk’s Head,” it is the dried root of Dipsacus asperoides C. Y. Cheng et T. M. Ai, a perennial herb belonging to the Caprifoliaceae (formerly Dipsacaceae) family. Xu Duan is slightly warm in nature, with a bitter and pungent taste, and enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. Additionally, Xu Duan supports rib development and promotes blood production and bone growth.

2. Strengthening the Fundamental Qi and Stabilizing Pregnancy

Xu Duan strengthens the fundamental Qi and stabilizes pregnancy. Its slightly warm nature and bitter-pungent flavor enable it to tonify the Liver and Kidneys and regulate the Chong and Ren meridians—thus reinforcing the foundational Qi and securing the fetus. It is clinically used for conditions such as Liver- and Kidney-deficiency, uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia), and restlessness or threatened miscarriage.
