What Causes Teeth Grinding in Children?
Teeth grinding (bruxism) in children is now very common. Parents often assume it is related to normal growth and development—perhaps due to calcium deficiency. In many cases, however, parents are unaware of the exact cause and tend not to take the issue seriously. In fact, numerous factors can contribute to childhood bruxism, including intestinal parasites, vitamin deficiencies, poor sleeping posture, oral health issues, and psychological factors. So, what causes teeth grinding in children?
What Causes Teeth Grinding in Children?
Children grind their teeth primarily due to uneven occlusion (bite). The main causes of pediatric bruxism include the following:
First, uneven occlusion or disordered occlusal relationships—such as deep bite or excessive overjet—can lead to teeth grinding. In such cases, parents are advised to promptly take their child to the dental department of a reputable hospital, where a dentist can adjust the occlusion to alleviate the bruxism.

Second, excessive mental stress or overexcitement from daytime activities—such as playing video games—may trigger bruxism during sleep. In these instances, parents should help the child relax emotionally, avoid overstimulation before bedtime, and consider psychological counseling to relieve bruxism symptoms.
Third, the presence of intestinal parasites—particularly roundworms—in the child’s gastrointestinal tract may also cause bruxism. This can result from the irritative effects of roundworm eggs. Parents are advised to consult a physician promptly for diagnosis and treatment.

Bruxism results from repeated contractions of the masticatory muscles and the resulting impact between upper and lower teeth. These muscle contractions are controlled by the trigeminal nerve. When the trigeminal nerve becomes overactive, it stimulates the masticatory muscles to contract involuntarily, leading to teeth grinding. Therefore, any factor affecting either the trigeminal nerve or the masticatory muscles may induce bruxism during sleep. We hope this explanation proves helpful.
