Baby, 51 days old, jaundice level: 4.5
At 51 days of age, an infant’s total serum bilirubin level of 4–5 mg/dL (commonly referred to as “jaundice 4–5”) may result from hemolytic disease, excessive internal damp-heat, or viral hepatitis. Medical treatment with appropriate medications is required.
1. Hemolytic disease: Jaundice due to hemolytic disease often arises from ABO or Rh blood group incompatibility between mother and infant, leading to maternal antibody production and subsequent massive destruction of fetal red blood cells. Under physician supervision, immunosuppressive agents may be administered for treatment.
2. Excessive internal damp-heat: Jaundice caused by excessive internal damp-heat falls under the category of “yin jaundice” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and may stem from acute icteric hepatitis. It is commonly accompanied by poor appetite and abdominal distension. Treatment involves herbal medicines that clear heat, resolve dampness, and promote jaundice resolution.
3. Viral hepatitis: Jaundice associated with viral hepatitis may result from intrauterine infection and is often accompanied by symptoms such as dark urine and nausea. Yinzhihuang Granules may be used to alleviate these symptoms.
During treatment, ensure adequate hydration and safe, moderate sun exposure, and maintain good hygiene practices.
