What Causes Semen to Become Gel-Like?
Causes of semen appearing gelatinous include prolonged abstinence, genitourinary infections, and semen non-liquefaction syndrome.
① Prolonged Abstinence
If a man has not engaged in sexual activity or ejaculated for an extended period, his semen concentration may increase and its color may become slightly yellowish; ejaculation may also result in gelatinous semen. In such cases, there is generally no cause for excessive concern—resuming regular sexual activity will typically restore semen to its normal consistency and appearance.

② Genitourinary Infection
Conditions such as prostatitis or seminal vesiculitis can also cause semen to appear gelatinous and yellowish. Inflammation of the prostate or seminal vesicles allows bacteria to irritate the seminal fluid, thereby compromising semen quality and potentially causing yellow discoloration. Prompt medical evaluation and treatment are recommended.
③ Semen Non-Liquefaction Syndrome
If semen remains viscous and gelatinous more than 30 minutes after ejaculation, this condition is termed semen non-liquefaction. The seminal vesicles secrete a coagulating protein that causes semen to initially coagulate into a gel-like state. However, the prostate gland secretes proteolytic enzymes and fibrinolysin, which break down this coagulating protein and facilitate semen liquefaction. Thus, semen non-liquefaction results from either excessive coagulating protein or insufficient proteolytic enzyme and/or fibrinolysin activity.
