Can Kun Tai Capsules be taken during menstruation?
Kuntai Capsules are generally not recommended during menstruation. Kuntai Capsules are a traditional Chinese patent medicine composed primarily of prepared rehmannia root, white peony root, skullcap root, coptis rhizome, poria, and donkey-hide gelatin. They function to nourish yin, clear heat, calm the mind, and alleviate irritability. Kuntai Capsules primarily act on the endometrium, promoting endometrial proliferation and helping regulate endometrial thickness—thus they are typically administered in the premenstrual phase. Use during menstruation may lead to excessive menstrual bleeding; in severe cases, it may even cause anemia or syncope in women. Therefore, Kuntai Capsules should generally be avoided during menstruation.
Kuntai Capsules are commonly prescribed for women undergoing perimenopause or postmenopause to support ovarian function and alleviate menopausal symptoms such as yin deficiency with hyperactive fire, facial flushing, dizziness, and tinnitus. Clinical efficacy has been found to be relatively favorable.
Women should avoid self-medicating during menstruation. Instead, they should prioritize rest, avoid overexertion or strenuous physical activity, maintain warmth to prevent cold exposure, and follow a light, bland diet—all of which contribute to overall health.
