Peppermint leaves are edible raw. They have a refreshing, cooling flavor and offer certain nutritional benefits. Peppermint leaves can effectively alleviate fever, sore throat, wind-heat common cold, and related symptoms. However, prolonged consumption should be avoided, as it may lead to deficiency of both Qi and Yin. Additionally, consumption at night is not recommended, as it may cause nervous system stimulation.

Peppermint leaves are safe for direct consumption. Their refreshing, cooling flavor is accompanied by notable nutritional value, offering significant health benefits. However, excessive intake is not recommended, as it may adversely affect health.

The cooling taste of peppermint leaves makes them especially effective when consumed raw to alleviate sore throat, common colds due to wind-cold invasion, and similar symptoms. They can also be brewed as tea or added to congee, both methods preserving their nutritional benefits. When consuming fresh peppermint leaves, thorough washing is essential prior to ingestion; otherwise, residual menthol on the leaves may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to digestive discomfort. Additionally, peppermint leaves possess medicinal properties and are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine—particularly for treating exogenous wind-heat syndromes—often in combination with herbs such as honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) to enhance therapeutic efficacy and support overall health.

Prolonged or excessive consumption of peppermint leaves should be avoided, as it may lead to deficiency of both Qi and Yin. Moreover, since peppermint is considered a “cold” food in traditional Chinese medicine, overconsumption may impair spleen and stomach function—especially in individuals with preexisting weakness of these organs—potentially exacerbating underlying conditions and compromising health. If consumed raw, peppermint leaves are best taken during daytime hours; nighttime consumption is discouraged, as it may overstimulate the central nervous system and cause insomnia.
