Introduction
Patients with thyroid nodules are advised to avoid seafood. Due to the high iodine content in seafood, excessive consumption may lead to nodule enlargement and hyperthyroidism. Additionally, patients should undergo regular elastography ultrasound examinations of the thyroid to assess whether the nodule margins are well-defined and whether the elasticity score is grade IV or higher. An ill-defined nodule margin typically corresponds to an elasticity score greater than grade IV.

With improvements in societal living standards, many individuals develop thyroid nodules due to occupational stress and unscientific dietary habits. At this point, patients often wonder whether they may consume seafood—so, are patients with thyroid nodules prohibited from eating seafood?

Can patients with thyroid nodules eat seafood?

Patients with thyroid nodules are generally advised to avoid seafood. Seafood contains high levels of iodine; excessive consumption may lead to nodule enlargement and hyperthyroidism. Additionally, patients should undergo regular elastography ultrasound examinations of the thyroid to assess nodule margins and elastographic scores. A score of Grade IV or higher indicates increased tissue stiffness, particularly when nodule margins appear ill-defined.

In such cases, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the nodule is recommended to determine its histopathological nature. If malignancy is confirmed pathologically, radical surgical resection is required. In daily life, patients should avoid alcohol consumption and refrain from staying up late or overexerting themselves. Furthermore, treatment—including pharmacotherapy—should be tailored according to thyroid function test results, as clinically indicated.

Patients with thyroid nodules may consume protein-rich foods, such as red meat, chicken, duck, soft-shelled turtle, and freshwater fish. They may also benefit from regularly consuming mulberries, shiitake mushrooms, and silver ear fungus. Ensuring adequate caloric intake is essential, as it supports overall health and recovery.
