Foods to Avoid with Thyroid Nodules
Individuals with thyroid nodules should avoid spicy and stimulating foods—including ginger, scallions, garlic, chili peppers, and mustard—as well as excessively greasy foods such as fatty meats and deep-fried items. Cold or raw foods (e.g., ice cream) should also be avoided. Additionally, patients with thyroid nodules must quit smoking and abstain from alcohol; they should limit consumption of strong coffee and tea, and avoid iodine-rich foods such as nori (seaweed), kelp, and dried shrimp.

Thyroid nodules are among the most common conditions encountered in outpatient thyroid surgery clinics. Surgical management of thyroid nodules typically involves the following steps: First, a color Doppler ultrasound examination is performed to evaluate the nodule. Nodules classified as TI-RADS category 3 or lower may be managed conservatively—for instance, with levothyroxine therapy, which can help suppress nodule growth. Second, if the ultrasound reveals a nodule graded TI-RADS 4 or higher, surgical excision may be indicated. During surgery, a rapid intraoperative pathological examination is conducted. If malignancy (i.e., thyroid cancer) is confirmed histologically, a radical surgical procedure can be performed immediately.

Symptoms associated with thyroid nodules largely depend on their underlying cause. For example, nodules resulting from inflammatory thyroid disease may present with fever and neck pain. Symptoms may also correlate with nodule size and number: larger nodules may manifest as visible or palpable neck masses—sometimes even apparent through the skin surface.
