Introduction
Causes of astigmatism in children may include excessive eye strain, congenital corneal developmental abnormalities, and corneal irregularities. Excessive eye use—such as prolonged viewing of electronic devices (e.g., smartphones), reading, or writing—can lead to significant visual fatigue. Over time, this may result in symptoms such as blurred vision, myopia, astigmatism, and other refractive errors, particularly in cases of congenital corneal developmental abnormalities.

Astigmatism is a very common eye condition, often occurring alongside myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). It primarily results from inadequate eye care. Although not life-threatening, astigmatism can cause significant inconvenience for affected individuals. Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on prevention in daily life. So, what causes astigmatism in children?

What Causes Astigmatism in Children?

Possible causes of astigmatism in children include excessive eye strain, congenital corneal developmental abnormalities, and uneven corneal curvature. Prolonged use of electronic devices such as smartphones—or extended periods of reading or writing—can lead to excessive visual fatigue. Over time, this may result in blurred vision, manifesting as myopia, astigmatism, or other refractive errors. In cases of congenital corneal developmental abnormalities, the cornea’s refractive power varies across different meridians, leading to astigmatism. Consequently, both distant and near objects appear blurry.

Astigmatism is essentially an abnormal refraction of light by the eye, which can be partially corrected through regular eye-rotation exercises. Begin by keeping your head and neck upright and straight. Open your eyes and gaze forward at the center of your forehead. Slowly rotate your eyes to the right, attempting to look toward your right ear. Then gradually shift your gaze downward, and finally rotate your eyes to the left, trying to focus on your left ear. Performing these eye-rotation exercises daily can effectively help correct astigmatism.

Patients are advised to use artificial tears or prescribed eye drops appropriately, as needed, to help slow disease progression. They should also avoid eye strain, sleep deprivation, and prolonged screen time. Additionally, proper hygiene measures should be taken to prevent cross-infection.
