Introduction
Conjunctivitis (“pink eye”) and eye redness (conjunctival hyperemia) can be differentiated based on their respective symptoms. Conjunctivitis is caused by inflammatory conditions, whereas eye redness results from factors such as eye strain or fatigue. Generally, eye redness resolves spontaneously after rest, while conjunctivitis requires targeted treatment for recovery. Patients with conjunctivitis often experience a foreign-body sensation in the eyes.

In daily life, eye redness and other adverse symptoms may occur for various reasons, and conjunctivitis (commonly known as “pink eye”) may also develop. Both conditions can significantly impair patients’ quality of life and even affect their overall health. So, how can one differentiate between conjunctivitis and simple eye redness?

How to Differentiate Conjunctivitis from Eye Redness

Conjunctivitis and eye redness can be distinguished based on their respective clinical manifestations. Conjunctivitis is caused by inflammatory disease processes, whereas eye redness typically results from factors such as eye strain or fatigue. Generally, eye redness resolves spontaneously with adequate rest, while conjunctivitis requires targeted medical treatment for recovery. Patients with conjunctivitis commonly experience a foreign-body sensation in the eyes, accompanied by burning, persistent itching, and excessive tearing. Photophobia is often prominent during daytime hours, necessitating sunglasses for comfort. In contrast, eye redness is frequently attributable to insufficient sleep; additionally, excessive eye rubbing can also lead to redness and swelling.

Treatment of conjunctivitis generally involves selecting an appropriate, pathogen-sensitive antibiotic under a physician’s guidance to control inflammation. Moreover, because conjunctivitis is highly contagious, strict isolation measures must be implemented throughout both treatment and recovery to prevent transmission. In contrast, simple eye redness usually improves with rest alone. It is also essential to avoid vigorous eye rubbing—especially when experiencing itchiness.

In daily life, maintain a balanced and regular diet—avoid spicy, irritating, or overly rich foods, and refrain from binge eating or staying up late. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
