Introduction
Developing hives after taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for dampness removal may be due to: 1. Drug allergy; or 2. A therapeutic “rash-emergence” effect. 1. Drug allergy: As TCM herbs possess certain individual-specific properties, they may trigger allergic reactions in some patients—manifesting as hives. In such cases, discontinue the medication immediately and consult your physician before adjusting the prescription and resuming treatment.

Developing skin rashes after taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for dampness removal may be due to: 1) drug allergy; or 2) a therapeutic “rash-emergence” response.

1) Drug allergy: As TCM herbs possess certain individual-specific properties, they may trigger allergic reactions in some patients—manifesting as skin rashes. In such cases, discontinue the medication immediately and consult your physician before adjusting or re-prescribing the formula.

2) Therapeutic rash-emergence (“tou zhen”): When internal dampness is particularly stubborn and unresponsive to conventional treatment, practitioners may prescribe herbs designed to promote the outward expression of pathogenic factors—sometimes resulting in transient skin rashes. If this occurs, consult your physician promptly and continue treatment only under their guidance.

During treatment, adhere strictly to the prescribed dosing schedule—consider setting reminders to avoid missed doses.
