Why do I get many pimples on my back after taking traditional Chinese medicine?
Acne flare-ups while taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may be due to: 1) an acne flare-up phase; 2) individual constitutional factors; or 3) irregular lifestyle habits. A detailed analysis follows:
1) Acne flare-up phase: The underlying acne condition may coincidentally be in its active growth, worsening, or flare-up stage. Therefore, new acne lesions may still appear before the full therapeutic effects of the TCM take hold—this is considered a normal and expected phenomenon.
2) Constitutional factors: Since each individual’s constitution and TCM pattern (zheng) differ, oral TCM formulas often include warming, circulatory, or qi-and-blood-regulating herbs. These herbs are typically mild or warm in nature. Some individuals—especially during the first 1–2 weeks of treatment—may experience transient acne breakouts, which is generally regarded as a normal response.
3) Irregular lifestyle habits: While undergoing TCM treatment for acne, it is essential to maintain regular dietary habits, consistent sleep schedules, and emotional balance.
Failure to adequately address these lifestyle factors—even while taking TCM—may still result in acne breakouts. During treatment, adopt a light, balanced diet and minimize intake of high-calorie and high-sugar foods.
