Introduction
Consuming Sanqi (Panax notoginseng) powder may trigger acne. Sanqi powder is warm in nature; thus, individuals with excessive internal heat or “fire” may experience acne breakouts after taking it. Additionally, Sanqi powder enhances skin metabolism and stimulates activity in the deeper layers of the skin. Consequently, individuals already prone to acne may notice an increase in breakouts following Sanqi powder consumption.

Consuming powdered notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) may trigger acne breakouts.

Causes:

1. Powdered notoginseng is warm in nature. Individuals with pre-existing internal heat or excessive “fire” in the body may experience acne breakouts after taking it.

2. Powdered notoginseng promotes skin metabolism and cellular turnover in the deeper layers of the skin. In individuals already prone to acne, this enhanced metabolic activity may temporarily exacerbate existing breakouts.

3. Some individuals may be allergic to notoginseng. Allergic reactions—including small red papules, erythema, or firm subcutaneous nodules—can closely resemble acne, leading to misinterpretation as acne.

Management:

1. For individuals prone to “heatiness” (excess internal heat), consider concurrently using herbs or medications that clear heat and reduce fire to restore internal balance while taking powdered notoginseng.

2. Individuals experiencing acne need not discontinue use—powdered notoginseng itself is not the underlying cause of acne.

3. Individuals suspected of having an allergic reaction to notoginseng should carefully assess whether facial lesions are truly acne. Allergic reactions typically involve additional systemic or local symptoms—such as dizziness, pruritus, or irritability—alongside skin manifestations. If an allergy to notoginseng is confirmed, discontinue use immediately to prevent further adverse effects.
