What should I do if my feet are peeling due to excessive dampness?
Dampness is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Excess internal dampness may lead to peeling skin on the feet; therefore, timely medical consultation and adherence to prescribed medications are essential.
Daily Care:
Maintain proper foot hygiene. Avoid scratching affected areas to prevent infection from spreading to other skin regions.
Soak your feet daily in warm water. Adding vinegar to the soaking water provides mild antibacterial effects. Alternatively, you may add TCM herbs known for their dampness-resolving properties—such as Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum bungeanum), mugwort (Artemisia argyi), or ginger—to the foot bath. After soaking, thoroughly dry your feet with a towel to ensure skin remains dry.
Precautions:
Wear loose-fitting, breathable footwear and socks to minimize excessive foot sweating and reduce the risk of secondary infection.
For more severe cases, topical medications may be used appropriately under medical guidance.
Dietary adjustments are important: avoid excessive consumption of cold or raw foods. Instead, incorporate spleen-strengthening and dampness-resolving foods, such as red beans, coix seed (Job’s tears), and Chinese yam.
Regular physical activity that promotes sweating is highly beneficial for eliminating dampness.
