Can Salvia miltiorrhiza tablets cause hypotension?
Many people experience hypotension, and its incidence varies depending on individual health conditions; however, it is primarily caused by hypotension itself. Hypotension is a common condition of concern for many individuals in modern times. So, can Danshen tablets cause hypotension?
Can Danshen tablets cause hypotension?
Danshen tablets generally do not cause hypotension. Their primary functions are to promote blood circulation, resolve blood stasis, regulate Qi flow, and relieve pain. They are mainly used to treat patients with chest bi syndrome (i.e., chest pain or angina pectoris), corresponding to Western medical diagnoses such as coronary artery disease and angina pectoris. Danshen tablets improve coronary arterial circulation and increase myocardial blood supply, thereby alleviating or reducing angina symptoms in cardiac patients—but they do not lower blood pressure. For patients with hypertension, antihypertensive treatment—either with traditional Chinese medicine (under physician guidance) or Western pharmaceuticals—may be appropriate. Commonly used traditional Chinese patent medicines with antihypertensive effects include Zhenju Jiangya Pian (Compound Chrysanthemum and Eucommia Tablets) and Duzhong Jiangya Wan (Eucommia Bark Antihypertensive Pills).

If a patient with hypotension also suffers from insufficient myocardial blood supply, Danshen tablets may be taken. Danshen tablets possess properties that tonify Qi and nourish blood; therefore, taking them will not adversely affect blood pressure. Additionally, patients with hypotension may benefit from consuming Huangqi (Astragalus root) and Renshen (ginseng), both of which also tonify Qi and nourish blood and may help improve blood pressure regulation. However, patients with hypotension must use any medication only under the guidance of a qualified physician. Self-medication should be avoided whenever possible, as it may lead to unwanted side effects.

Patients are advised to avoid excessive fatigue, severe mental stress, strenuous physical labor, and intense exercise in daily life. A light, balanced diet is recommended. We hope this information is helpful to you.
