What causes a whistling sound in the throat?
The patient has audible stridor in the throat, which may result from laryngeal inflammation. If laryngeal inflammation is the cause, aggressive anti-inflammatory and anti-edema treatment is required, along with expectorant medications. Clinically, intravenous fluid therapy is commonly employed, which typically facilitates a faster recovery.
Stridor may also stem from other conditions—for instance, a foreign body lodged in the pharynx or larynx, which can produce stridor. In such cases, the patient should seek prompt medical evaluation and undergo laryngoscopy to safely remove the foreign body. Alternatively, stridor could indicate a laryngeal mass; therefore, biopsy is essential to determine the nature of the lesion, followed by appropriate surgical intervention as indicated.
In daily life, patients should maintain a balanced diet, avoiding spicy, irritating, or greasy foods. Barbecued and deep-fried foods can adversely irritate the pharynx and larynx, potentially impeding resolution of stridor. Incorporating medicinal dietary therapies (e.g., herbal soups or teas) may help alleviate stridor symptoms and offer additional benefits, including clearing heat, detoxifying, and reducing internal “fire.”
