Can expired betel nuts be consumed?
Betel nuts typically have a shelf life of approximately 2–4 weeks. Once expired, they should no longer be consumed. Continued consumption may lead to neurological symptoms such as numbness or hallucinations, as well as acute gastrointestinal reactions—including belching, abdominal distension, and vomiting—and may even cause food poisoning, all of which are detrimental to health. Even if expired betel nuts appear normal to the naked eye, they may have undergone internal deterioration and become heavily contaminated with bacteria and microorganisms; consuming them may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa and trigger adverse reactions. Moreover, expired betel nuts often develop off-odors and lose their edibility entirely. When purchasing betel nuts, always check the expiration date and store them in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.
Additionally, it is advisable to limit betel nut consumption in daily life. Betel nuts exert stimulatory effects on the nervous system and possess addictive potential. Prolonged use may disrupt neural function and increase the risk of dependence, thereby adversely affecting overall health.
