Individuals with high blood glucose may drink moderate amounts of water infused with Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong). This will not adversely affect blood glucose levels and may even exert a mild hypoglycemic effect. However, long-term or excessive consumption should be avoided, as Maidong is cold in nature and may overburden the spleen and stomach, potentially compromising overall health.
Maidong contains substantial amounts of purified oligosaccharides, which do not elevate blood glucose after ingestion and are readily absorbed by the body. These compounds may enhance insulin sensitivity to some extent; thus, moderate consumption of Maidong-infused water may support glycemic control. Nevertheless, Maidong cannot substitute for prescribed medications. Therefore, individuals with diabetes must strictly follow their physician’s instructions and manage blood glucose under medical supervision.
People with diabetes are encouraged to consume more whole grains—such as foxtail millet, corn, and oats—and limit refined carbohydrate foods like noodles and steamed buns.
