Risks of Using the LEEP Knife for Cervical Erosion
If cervical ectropion (formerly termed “cervical erosion”) is severe in women, physicians may recommend conventional surgical treatment (i.e., cold-knife conization). So, what are the risks associated with using the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) for cervical ectropion?
Risks of Using LEEP for Cervical Ectropion
The potential risks of using LEEP for cervical ectropion include the following:
1. Risk of cervical injury, potentially leading to cervical shortening and an increased likelihood of late-term miscarriage during subsequent pregnancy.
2. Increased risk of localized scar formation, which may result in scar-related dystocia (difficult labor) during future pregnancies.
3. Cold-knife conization may cause intrauterine adhesions, potentially resulting in dysmenorrhea or reduced menstrual flow. In contrast, LEEP increases overall surgical costs.

Cervical ectropion is extremely common in gynecology and results from the outward eversion of columnar epithelium from the endocervical canal. Currently, clinical guidelines do not recommend overtreatment of cervical ectropion—especially the inappropriate use of LEEP for this condition, as practiced in some hospitals, which is medically unjustified. Asymptomatic cervical ectropion requires no intervention. With advancing age, cervical ectropion often resolves spontaneously. However, if severe ectropion repeatedly causes bleeding or inflammation, alternative treatments such as laser ablation or cryotherapy may be considered.

Patients with cervical ectropion should monitor for symptoms such as postcoital bleeding and signs of cervicitis. If cervicitis is complex or persistent, timely treatment is warranted. Additionally, attention to diet and lifestyle is essential: consume high-protein, high-vitamin foods—including eggs, beef, lean meats, and kiwifruit—and avoid raw, cold, or spicy foods. Maintain regular sleep schedules and ensure proper perineal hygiene. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
