How to Relieve Menstrual Cramps
In daily life, frequent consumption of raw or cold foods—or wearing clothing that exposes the navel—may contribute to menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea). So, how can one alleviate menstrual cramps?
How to Relieve Menstrual Cramps
Abdominal pain during menstruation can be eased using the following methods: 1. Apply heat to the lower abdomen. Heat therapy improves local blood circulation, facilitating smoother menstrual flow and thereby alleviating dysmenorrhea. 2. Perform moxibustion on abdominal acupoints—such as the Zigong (Uterus) point, Guanyuan (CV4), and Qihai (CV6)—which may help relieve menstrual cramps. 3. Drink warm brown sugar water, which promotes unobstructed menstrual flow and effectively eases cramping. Additionally, acupuncture may also be used to relieve dysmenorrhea.

Dysmenorrhea is classified into two main types: primary and secondary. Most cases of primary dysmenorrhea are associated with abnormal uterine positioning—particularly excessive anteversion or retroversion—which impedes smooth menstrual outflow and leads to cramping. Increased secretion of prostaglandins by the endometrium, causing intense uterine contractions, is another common cause. Secondary dysmenorrhea is typically attributable to underlying gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease—all of which may be linked to menstrual pain.

If menstrual cramps are especially severe, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist for proper evaluation and treatment. I hope this article proves helpful to you!
