Introduction
Finasteride can treat hair loss. It is an androgen inhibitor and is effective for male-pattern hair loss, making it a commonly used medication for this condition. However, finasteride is only effective for androgen-related (male-pattern) hair loss and typically shows no efficacy for hair loss caused by other factors—such as psychological stress or nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, if hair loss occurs, the underlying cause should first be identified through appropriate evaluation.

Hair loss occurs when hair follicles reach a certain stage of growth and naturally enter the telogen (resting) or catagen (regression) phase within their normal growth cycle. As hair continuously renews itself, shedding is a natural phenomenon. Hair loss is broadly categorized into physiological (normal) and pathological (abnormal) types. Physiological hair loss typically does not require specific treatment, whereas pathological hair loss is more severe. So, can finasteride treat hair loss?

Can finasteride treat hair loss?

Yes, finasteride can treat hair loss. It is an androgen inhibitor and is effective for male-pattern hair loss—the most commonly prescribed medication for androgenetic alopecia in men. However, its efficacy is limited to androgen-related hair loss; it generally has no therapeutic effect on hair loss caused by other factors, such as psychological stress or nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, if hair loss occurs, the underlying cause should first be identified. If diagnosed as androgenetic alopecia—or if the patient is male—finasteride may be prescribed under a physician’s guidance.

In addition to oral finasteride prescribed by a physician, topical treatments are often used adjunctively for male androgenetic alopecia. Minoxidil is the most commonly used topical hair regrowth agent, with men typically using the 5% concentration. Minoxidil must also be used strictly under medical supervision and consistently throughout the prescribed treatment course.

Do not discontinue treatment arbitrarily during therapy. Generally, it is recommended to gradually taper off the medication after hair regrowth is achieved; abrupt discontinuation should be avoided to prevent relapse of hair loss. We hope this information is helpful to you!
