The simplest method for suctioning sputum in patients
When a patient produces excessive pharyngeal secretions that are difficult to expel, suctioning using an electric suction apparatus may be performed following clinical assessment by a physician. This method is simple and effective for removing secretions and alleviating pharyngeal discomfort. The specific procedure is as follows:

1. After the nurse turns on the suction apparatus and adjusts the pressure, she tests the suction for patency. The patient then slowly turns their head toward the nurse while opening their mouth.
2. The nurse inserts the suction catheter into the oral cavity to a depth of 15 cm, rotates it gently from side to side, and applies suction for 10–15 seconds before withdrawing it upward.
3. Upon completion of suctioning, the nurse disposes of used supplies and checks the patient’s oral mucosa for any signs of injury.
