Asthma patients commonly exhibit excessive cholinergic nervous system activity, which triggers bronchial smooth muscle spasm. However, several medications can relax bronchial smooth muscle; among these, tiotropium bromide and ipratropium bromide are prominent examples belonging to the anticholinergic class. The first category comprises anticholinergic agents—long-acting muscarinic antagonists—with atropine being a clinically common representative. During an asthma attack, bronchospasm occurs due to internal or external environmental stimuli activating vagal nerve endings. Once peripheral nerve tone increases, the baseline bronchial lumen narrows, impairing respiration. Anticholinergic drugs inhibit vagal nerve activity in humans, thereby preventing bronchospasm and promoting relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle.

The second category includes methylxanthines, subdivided into long-acting and short-acting theophyllines. These are also widely used bronchodilators in clinical practice. Their primary function is to alleviate airway smooth muscle spasm in asthma patients, improve respiratory muscle function, and ultimately achieve airway clearance, relieve airflow limitation, and reduce wheezing. However, excessive theophylline dosing may cause adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, and palpitations. Numerous bronchodilators are available; regardless of type, their shared purpose is to alleviate asthma-related symptoms—including dyspnea, cough, and chest tightness—by relaxing smooth muscle and improving airway patency.

Patients are advised to engage in regular physical activity, avoid pets and pollen, and ensure frequent ventilation of indoor spaces. Additionally, wearing appropriate clothing during cold weather helps reduce the risk of common colds. We hope this information proves helpful.
