Introduction

In real life, some patients experience extremely heavy menstrual bleeding. Additionally, adverse symptoms such as blood clots may occur, causing significant psychological distress for women who fear potential harm to their physical health. So, what are the causes of heavy menstrual bleeding?

Causes of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

A woman’s normal menstrual blood loss typically ranges from 20 to 60 mL. Menstrual bleeding exceeding 100 mL is classified as menorrhagia (abnormally heavy or prolonged menstruation). Common causes of menorrhagia include endometrial polyps, submucosal uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis. Furthermore, after insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD), the device can increase endometrial surface area within the uterine cavity and impair uterine contractility. Consequently, menstrual flow significantly increases and menstrual duration often lengthens.

Endometrial polyps are a clinically common cause of heavy menstrual bleeding. Affected patients often present with increased menstrual volume, prolonged menses, and shortened intermenstrual intervals. Similarly, patients with submucosal fibroids or endometrial pathology frequently exhibit endometrial thickening and increased menstrual flow. Certain common endometrial malignancies or gynecologic cancers may also manifest as menorrhagia and prolonged bleeding; therefore, prompt medical evaluation and targeted treatment are essential. While menstrual blood loss between 20–60 mL is considered normal, volumes exceeding 80 mL indicate menorrhagia. Medical evaluation is mandatory, as recurrent menorrhagia can lead to anemia and adversely affect overall health.

Patients are advised to avoid underwater activities, refrain from consuming raw, cold, or spicy foods, and abstain from sexual intercourse. We hope this information proves helpful.
