Introduction
After wisdom tooth extraction, patients may resume brushing their teeth after 24 hours. Bleeding from the extraction socket is common following wisdom tooth removal. The dentist will place a small cotton ball or gauze pad over the extraction site and instruct the patient to bite down firmly. Typically, bleeding subsides within approximately 15 minutes. Therefore, it is recommended that the patient remove and discard the cotton ball or gauze after about 30 minutes.

Numerous common dental conditions occur in daily life, and many oral health issues may stem from impacted or problematic wisdom teeth—of which there are several types. So, how soon after wisdom tooth extraction can you resume brushing your teeth?

How Soon After Wisdom Tooth Extraction Can You Brush Your Teeth?

Patients may resume brushing their teeth 24 hours after wisdom tooth extraction. Following extraction, the socket typically bleeds. To control bleeding, the dentist places a small cotton gauze pad over the extraction site and instructs the patient to bite down firmly. Bleeding usually subsides within approximately 15 minutes. Therefore, patients are advised to remove the gauze pad after about 30 minutes. Upon removal, a blood clot should be visible within the extraction socket.

If the blood clot remains unstable within the first 24 hours, brushing should be avoided. Vigorous brushing may dislodge the fragile clot. Once the clot is lost, the underlying bony walls of the socket become exposed to the oral environment. Given the high bacterial load in the mouth, this exposure increases the risk of infection and severe pain—a condition medically termed “dry socket.” Thus, brushing must be postponed until at least 24 hours post-extraction. Thereafter, thorough yet gentle brushing is recommended, as maintaining optimal oral hygiene is essential for preventing infection and ensuring proper wound healing.

Patients are advised to maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing thoroughly twice daily and rinsing with water or mouthwash after every meal. We hope this information proves helpful.
