How to Treat Oral Halitosis
Halitosis is an unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth, which may resemble the smell of onions, rotten apples, rotten eggs, decaying meat, or even feces. Such offensive odors can cause others to avoid the affected individual and significantly impair daily life and social interactions. Therefore, timely intervention is essential to treat halitosis. So, how is oral halitosis treated?
How Is Oral Halitosis Treated?
If a patient experiences oral odor, they should consult a dentist. If dental calculus (tartar) and soft plaque are detected, ultrasonic teeth cleaning is recommended. Additionally, patients should undergo routine ultrasonic cleanings approximately every six months. After professional cleaning, thorough toothbrushing is essential. Dental floss or interdental brushes may be used to clean adjacent tooth surfaces, thereby enhancing and maintaining treatment efficacy. Carious (decayed) teeth can also contribute to halitosis; thus, decayed tissue must be removed and the cavity filled. In cases of severe caries, root canal therapy may be required following cavity preparation—or, if the tooth is non-restorable, extraction may be necessary. A thickened tongue coating may also contribute to bad breath; gentle cleaning using a tongue scraper or soft toothbrush can help alleviate this issue.

Frequent or aggressive tongue scraping may irritate taste buds, damage lingual papillae, and potentially lead to adverse effects such as numbness of the dorsal tongue surface, loss of taste sensation, and decreased appetite. In healthy individuals, the tongue coating should be thin and white. Changes in its thickness or color often signal underlying systemic or oral pathology. In such cases, simple tongue brushing is insufficient—medical evaluation is warranted. Self-scraping prior to clinical assessment may interfere with accurate diagnosis.

Patients are advised to maintain good oral hygiene, brush their teeth thoroughly twice daily (morning and evening), and consume ample fresh fruits and vegetables. We hope this information proves helpful.
