Can Huoxiang Zhengqi Water Treat Onychomycosis (Gray Nail)?
Onychomycosis (gray nail) is highly contagious; therefore, prompt attention is essential upon diagnosis. While pharmacological treatment is the standard approach, some patients self-administer Huoxiang Zhengqi Water to treat onychomycosis. But can Huoxiang Zhengqi Water effectively treat onychomycosis?
Can Huoxiang Zhengqi Water Treat Onychomycosis?
Huoxiang Zhengqi Water is a traditional Chinese patent medicine primarily indicated for heatstroke and also exhibits certain efficacy in alleviating symptoms such as abdominal distension and pain, diarrhea, and fever. However, onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail plate or nail bed caused by dermatophytes. Huoxiang Zhengqi Water is ineffective against fungal infections and thus cannot be used to treat onychomycosis.

Pharmacotherapy remains one of the clinically proven effective treatment modalities for onychomycosis, exerting antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and fungistatic effects to inhibit fungal recurrence. Treatment options include topical agents and systemic oral medications. Commonly used topical agents include Lentinan–Povidone Iodine Solution, Amorolfine solution, and 8% Ciclopirox lacquer—these demonstrate good efficacy but typically require prolonged treatment durations of 6–10 months for complete nail regrowth.

Commonly prescribed oral antifungal agents include Terbinafine, Itraconazole, and Ketoconazole. However, the choice of specific medication must be determined by a physician based on disease severity. We hope this information proves helpful to you!
