Introduction
The treatment of acute pharyngitis includes pharmacotherapy. First-line antibiotics are penicillins or cephalosporins, such as amoxicillin, cefradine, and cefdinir. Oral antiviral agents—e.g., antiviral oral solution and Pudilan oral solution—should also be administered. Additionally, traditional Chinese patent medicines for pharyngitis may be taken orally, such as Compound Shuanghua Tablets, Lanqin Oral Solution, and Juzhi Bingmei Tablets.

Acute pharyngitis is a common condition familiar to many people. Unlike chronic pharyngitis, acute pharyngitis has a sudden onset and more pronounced symptoms, making it relatively easy to detect. Many patients with acute pharyngitis also concurrently suffer from acute rhinitis. Because acute pharyngitis often causes significant discomfort, timely treatment is essential to minimize its impact on work and daily life. So, what are the treatment options for acute pharyngitis?

Treatment Options for Acute Pharyngitis

Pharmacological treatment is the primary approach for acute pharyngitis. Antibiotics—particularly penicillins or cephalosporins—are first-line choices; examples include amoxicillin, cefradine, and cefdinir. Oral antiviral agents, such as antiviral oral liquid or Pudilan oral liquid, should also be administered. Additionally, traditional Chinese patent medicines indicated for pharyngitis—such as Compound Shuanghua Tablets, Lanqin Oral Liquid, and Juzhi Bingmei Tablets—may be used. Diet should be light and bland; patients should drink plenty of warm water and avoid prolonged consumption of spicy or irritating foods. For patients with high fever, oral antipyretics and analgesics may be prescribed. Adequate rest, avoidance of late-night activities, proper warmth preservation, and prevention of recurrent colds are also crucial.

Other pharmacological treatments include throat lozenges (e.g., iodine throat tablets, Watermelon Paste tablets, menthol throat tablets); traditional Chinese medicine preparations such as Liu Shen Wan (Six God Pills) and antiviral oral liquid; increased fluid intake for patients with severe systemic symptoms, along with antipyretics if fever is present; antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infection; and voice rest for patients with hoarseness to allow vocal cord recovery. Ultrasonic nebulization therapy may also be employed, with dexamethasone added to the nebulized solution.

Moreover, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers an effective alternative. In TCM, for cases presenting with severe chills, mild fever, absence of sweating, and a floating pulse, Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is indicated. For high fever with milder chills, Yin Qiao San (Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder), Niuhuang Jiedu Wan (Bezoar Detoxifying Pills), Jiedu Xiaoyan Wan (Detoxifying and Anti-inflammatory Pills), or Liu Shen Wan may be prescribed. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
