Introduction
Nasal irrigation with normal saline offers certain therapeutic benefits for patients with sinusitis. By leveraging the osmotic effect of normal saline, nasal mucosal edema can be reduced, thereby alleviating nasal congestion. However, this is only an adjunctive treatment and cannot completely cure sinusitis. It must be combined with pharmacotherapy, such as oral clarithromycin dispersible tablets and enteric-coated eucalyptus-lemon soft capsules.

In daily life, many patients with sinusitis experience significant impairment to their normal daily activities and work. Some consider using saline solution for nasal irrigation—so, is saline irrigation appropriate for sinusitis?

Is Saline Irrigation Suitable for Sinusitis?

Nasal irrigation with saline solution offers certain therapeutic benefits for patients with sinusitis. Through its osmotic effect, saline helps reduce edema of the nasal mucosa, thereby alleviating nasal congestion. However, this approach serves only as an adjunctive therapy and cannot fully cure sinusitis. Comprehensive treatment should include pharmacotherapy—for example, oral clarithromycin dispersible tablets and eucalyptus-lemon-flavored enteric-coated soft capsules. Patients should also maintain good nasal hygiene in daily life and avoid forceful nose-blowing or picking the nose.

The etiology of sinusitis can be categorized into systemic and local factors. Systemic causes include excessive fatigue, exposure to cold, or underlying conditions such as anemia, diabetes, or thyroid disorders—all of which compromise immune function and create opportunities for bacterial invasion, thereby triggering sinusitis. Local causes are numerous and include acute or chronic rhinitis, deviated nasal septum, hypertrophy of the middle turbinate, and allergic rhinitis. These conditions obstruct the sinus ostia, impairing sinus drainage and ventilation, ultimately leading to sinusitis.

Sinusitis warrants prompt attention. Once symptoms appear, patients should seek timely medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital. We hope this information has been helpful to you!
