Introduction

After menstruation ends, many women feel refreshed and energized. So, is it safe to have intercourse on the third day of menstruation?

Can you have intercourse on the third day of menstruation?

Intercourse may resume once menstruation has completely ended; however, it is generally recommended to wait until 2–3 days after the period has fully stopped. This is because, for most women, the end of menstrual bleeding does not necessarily indicate complete endometrial repair—residual bleeding (“rebound menstruation”) may occur over the next one or two days. Sexual intercourse should be avoided during menstruation, as a woman’s immune resistance is lowered, the cervical os is open, and the uterine lining remains in a state of active shedding with exposed wound surfaces. Pelvic congestion induced by sexual activity and potential introduction of pathogens during intercourse increase the risk of infection.

During menstruation, hygiene is paramount to prevent infection; particular attention should be paid to cleanliness of the genital area. Douching is not recommended, but showering is acceptable. The external genitalia may be gently rinsed with clean water each evening. Sanitary pads should be soft, clean, and changed frequently. Stay warm and avoid cold exposure. Avoid excessive physical exertion, and refrain from consuming raw, cold, sour, spicy, or otherwise irritating foods. Limit alcohol intake, drink plenty of warm water, maintain regular bowel movements to reduce pelvic congestion, get adequate rest, and ensure sufficient sleep.

If your usual menstrual cycle is approximately 30 days but has recently—within the past six months—undergone a significant change (e.g., delayed by 10 days or even half a month), this constitutes an abnormal pattern. Similarly, shortening of the cycle by more than 7–10 days prior to menopause is also considered abnormal. We hope this information proves helpful!
