Keeping cold medications at home is a widely accepted practice. “Cold medications” refer to various drugs used for treating the common cold—including traditional Chinese patent medicines, decoctions, Western pharmaceuticals, and effervescent granules. Over-the-counter (OTC) cold remedies can be broadly categorized into Western medicines and traditional Chinese patent medicines. So, what are the commonly used cold medications? Common Cold Medications

I. Western Medicines

1. Aspirin

Aspirin primarily exerts antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antirheumatic effects by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. It is indicated for high fever, common cold, headache, and myalgia. However, it may cause adverse reactions, including exacerbation of gastric or duodenal ulcers, fetal abnormalities when used during pregnancy, and potential renal impairment in patients with preexisting renal insufficiency.

2. Virazole (Ribavirin)

Virazole effectively inhibits viral replication and demonstrates potent antiviral activity against influenza and parainfluenza viruses. It is used to treat the common cold, influenza, viral tracheobronchitis, mumps, varicella, measles, and viral keratitis or conjunctivitis. Common adverse reactions include diaphoresis and anorexia.

3. Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is primarily indicated for fever reduction, pain relief, anti-inflammatory therapy, dysmenorrhea, dental pain, low back pain, and rheumatoid arthritis. Its most common adverse effect is mild gastrointestinal discomfort; therefore, it is recommended to take it after meals.

II. Traditional Chinese Patent Medicines

1. Baiyunshan Xiao Chai Hu Granules

Baiyunshan Xiao Chai Hu Granules are used to release exterior pathogens, clear heat, soothe the liver, and harmonize the stomach. They are commonly prescribed for externally-contracted illnesses characterized by Shaoyang syndrome—typically presenting with alternating chills and fever, distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, poor appetite, irritability with nausea, bitter taste in the mouth, and dry throat. The granules should be dissolved in boiling water before oral administration.

2. Gan Mao Ning (Cold Relief Tablets)

Gan Mao Ning is formulated from herbs including Schizonepeta (Jing Jie), Saposhnikovia (Fang Feng), Perilla (Zi Su), Isatis leaf (Da Qing Ye), and Lonicera (Si Ji Qing). It is especially suitable for wind-cold type colds—characterized by marked aversion to cold, fever, headache, nasal congestion, and clear nasal discharge.

3. Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian (Honeysuckle & Forsythia Detoxifying Tablets)

Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian is indicated for wind-heat type colds, featuring pronounced fever, mild chills, dizziness, headache, nasal congestion, sore throat, generalized fatigue, and thirst with preference for fluids. It functions to dispel wind, release the exterior, clear heat, and detoxify.
