How to Relieve Tinnitus at High Altitudes
Many people experience tinnitus. Due to persistent or intermittent tinnitus, patients often become highly agitated and anxious. These negative emotions can exacerbate tinnitus symptoms, creating a vicious cycle. Tinnitus may also lead to hearing loss. So, how can high-altitude tinnitus be alleviated?
How to Alleviate High-Altitude Tinnitus
For high-altitude tinnitus, active anti-inflammatory treatment is recommended. Ceftriaxone sodium is a commonly used clinical medication. If symptoms improve with active treatment, oral cefuroxime axetil tablets may also be employed for anti-inflammatory therapy. Levofloxacin ear drops can be applied locally to the ear; patients are advised to practice the Valsalva maneuver (pinching the nose and gently blowing). When necessary, patients may undergo eustachian tube insufflation at a hospital—a procedure that effectively regulates middle ear pressure changes. With prompt and appropriate treatment, tinnitus symptoms typically improve. Further medical evaluation and management may be required if symptoms persist.

Tinnitus may arise from various causes, including ear disorders and vascular conditions. External ear conditions—such as cerumen impaction and otitis externa—as well as middle ear diseases—including otitis media, otosclerosis, tympanic membrane perforation—and inner ear disorders—such as acoustic neuroma and Ménière’s syndrome—can all trigger tinnitus. Vascular abnormalities—including vascular malformations, glomus jugulare tumors, hemangiomas, and dilation of small vessels within the ear—may also cause tinnitus. Venous tinnitus typically presents as a noisy, non-pulsatile sound, whereas arterial tinnitus is usually synchronous with the pulse.

Patients with tinnitus should maintain healthy work and lifestyle habits: adhere to regular working and sleeping schedules, avoid excessive fatigue, ensure adequate and restful sleep, and maintain emotional stability—avoiding extreme excitement or stress.
