How to Differentiate Between Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency
The health of the kidneys directly affects the abundance or deficiency of essence (Jing), Qi, and blood. Once kidney deficiency occurs, the body manifests a series of symptoms. Particularly in men, poor kidney function often correlates with diminished sexual function. Kidney deficiency is further classified into two primary patterns: Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency. So how can one differentiate between Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency?
How to Differentiate Between Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency
Differentiation between Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency relies primarily on symptom assessment. Kidney Yin Deficiency commonly presents with low back and knee soreness or weakness, dizziness, tinnitus, diminished hearing, dry mouth and throat, irritability and heat sensations, heat in the palms and soles, night sweats, constipation, nocturnal emissions in men, a thin or rapid pulse, and a red tongue. In contrast, Kidney Yang Deficiency typically manifests as low back and knee soreness or pain, aversion to cold, edema in the lower limbs, cold extremities, mental fatigue or lethargy, prolonged or incomplete urination, decreased male sexual function—including impotence and nocturnal emissions—and in women, a “cold uterus” leading to infertility.

Patients with kidney deficiency should generally maintain regular dietary and lifestyle habits, avoid alcohol and tobacco, and refrain from consuming spicy or stimulating foods. In addition to pharmacological treatment, patients are advised to follow a low-salt, low-fat diet and ensure adequate rest. Emotional regulation is important, and regular physical activity—such as walking or calisthenics—is encouraged. Commonly prescribed herbal formulas include Yougui Wan (Right-Returning Pill) or Jinkui Shenqi Wan (Golden Cabinet Kidney-Qi Pill).

Patients are advised to cultivate healthy lifestyle habits and adopt a balanced diet, avoiding spicy and irritating foods. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
