Introduction
Whether otitis externa eczema can resolve spontaneously depends on the severity of the condition and the treatment approach. If the otitis externa eczema is mild, the number and extent of eczematous lesions on the skin and mucosa of the external auditory canal are relatively small. Additionally, if the causative allergen has been identified, avoiding exposure to that allergen after onset may allow the otitis externa eczema to resolve spontaneously.

Some parents only bring their infants to the hospital when they notice yellowish discoloration of the ears and frequent scratching by the infant’s hands. Doctors then diagnose external auditory canal eczema. Since many parents are unfamiliar with this condition, they often feel confused and overwhelmed, unsure of how to proceed. So, can external auditory canal eczema resolve spontaneously?

Can External Auditory Canal Eczema Resolve Spontaneously?

Whether external auditory canal eczema can resolve spontaneously depends on the severity of the disease and the appropriateness of treatment. In mild cases—where the number and extent of eczematous lesions on the skin and mucosa of the external auditory canal are relatively limited—and where the causative allergen has been clearly identified, avoiding further exposure to that allergen after onset may allow the condition to resolve spontaneously.

However, if the eczema is severe, complicated by secondary infection, or if the allergen cannot be promptly identified—leading to prolonged or recurrent otogenic allergen exposure—the condition typically will not resolve spontaneously. External auditory canal eczema is essentially an allergic disorder of the external auditory canal and is frequently accompanied by external auditory canal inflammation. If inflammation is present, antibiotics such as cefprozil may be added. In fact, antiallergic therapy alone is often sufficient; the most commonly used agent is levocetirizine, administered orally in combination with topical corticosteroid ointments.

In daily life, maintain a regular diet—avoid spicy and irritating foods, overeating, and staying up late. We hope this information is helpful to you.
