How is rhinitis treated in children?
Rhinitis is a highly prevalent condition affecting a broad population—including both adults and children. When children develop rhinitis, parents must pay close attention and promptly take them to the hospital for examination and treatment, ensuring timely prevention and management of the disease. So, how is rhinitis treated in children?
How Is Rhinitis Treated in Children?
In children, rhinitis can be treated with intranasal corticosteroid sprays. However, treatment should always be conducted under the guidance of an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). Nasal congestion in children may stem from chronic simple rhinitis. If the diagnosis is simple rhinitis—the mildest form of rhinitis—it is often associated with common colds. In cases of mild nasal congestion, medication is generally not recommended. Instead, encourage the child to engage in regular physical activity and avoid spicy or irritating foods. Characteristic symptoms of rhinitis include nasal congestion and/or rhinorrhea; nasal obstruction is especially common in children. Clinical evaluation typically includes assessment of turbinate hypertrophy—simple rhinitis and hypertrophic rhinitis cannot be ruled out without proper examination. Rhinitis may lead to nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, headache, impaired memory, and difficulty concentrating. Diagnosis and management involve ENT evaluation, oral medications, and topical intranasal sprays.

If a child experiences nasal obstruction, parents may apply a warm, moist towel over the nose to maintain warmth and humidity. Ensure the towel temperature is not excessively high to prevent scalding. If dried nasal secretions (crusts) are present, gently wipe the nasal vestibule using a sterile cotton swab dipped in water—or gently massage the bridge of the nose or the areas alongside the nostrils to help relieve congestion.

In daily life, children should consume light, non-irritating foods and strictly avoid spicy or stimulating foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
