Introduction
Children with athlete’s foot can be treated externally with antifungal medications. Butenafine cream is commonly used and is both safe and effective. It is important to note that topical treatment should be continued for an extended period. Because fungi have a long growth cycle, skin lesions may completely resolve after 1–2 weeks of cream application; however, to prevent recurrence due to reinfection, topical treatment should be continued for three months.

For children suffering from athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), symptoms often worsen during summer, causing intense itching and discomfort. Removing shoes may also release an unpleasant odor—adding to parental distress. Therefore, identifying the correct treatment approach is essential. So, how should athlete’s foot in children be treated?

How to Treat Athlete’s Foot in Children

Athlete’s foot in children can be effectively managed with topical antifungal medications. Butenafine cream is commonly used and is both safe and effective. It is important to note that topical treatment should be continued for an extended period. Because fungi have a long growth cycle, skin lesions may disappear completely after 1–2 weeks of cream application; however, to prevent recurrence due to re-infection, treatment should be continued for at least three months.

Children with athlete’s foot should maintain dry, clean, and comfortable footwear and socks. Avoid wearing tightly enclosed shoes. After washing shoes and socks, expose them to direct sunlight for several hours to kill residual fungi. Alternatively, sprinkle talcum powder or a disinfectant inside shoes. Soaking feet in warm saline solution—or in water boiled with Sichuan pepper—may also provide symptomatic relief.

Therefore, daily foot hygiene must be prioritized. Choose breathable cotton socks and well-fitting, ventilated shoes. In terms of diet, emphasize light, easily digestible foods and avoid allergenic or highly stimulating foods, which may exacerbate athlete’s foot. We hope this information proves helpful.
