Does foot peeling indicate athlete’s foot?
Many people suffer from athlete’s foot (tinea pedis). In fact, athlete’s foot is caused by multiple factors, with complex etiologies and numerous clinical subtypes. Some individuals experience isolated athlete’s foot, whereas others may develop additional complications alongside it. So, does peeling skin on the feet indicate athlete’s foot?
Does Peeling Skin on the Feet Indicate Athlete’s Foot?
Peeling skin on the feet may be a sign of athlete’s foot, but not all cases of foot peeling are attributable to this condition. Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the feet—also known as tinea pedis—and manifests in several distinct clinical forms: interdigital (maceration-erosion), vesicular, and hyperkeratotic. In the interdigital type, small blisters appear between the toes, accompanied by superficial skin shedding; prolonged moisture exposure causes the skin to become whitish and macerated, and removal of the white epidermis reveals underlying reddened, tender tissue. The vesicular type presents as clusters of blisters along the lateral margins of the feet or between the toes. The hyperkeratotic type is characterized by thickened, scaly, fissured, and desquamating skin on the soles or heels. If foot peeling occurs, prompt medical evaluation—including appropriate diagnostic testing—is essential for accurate diagnosis.

Foot peeling is commonly associated with chronic eczema or tinea pedis, but may also result from vitamin A deficiency or insufficient trace elements. Vitamin A deficiency can cause dry, scaly skin; brittle, dull, thinning, or falling hair; brittle nails; and, in severe cases, night blindness. Serum vitamin A levels can be measured via blood test to confirm deficiency. If diagnosed, dietary supplementation with vitamin A–rich foods is recommended—including animal liver, egg yolks, milk, and dark-colored vegetables and fruits such as carrots, spinach, and oranges.

We recommend that patients consume more fresh fruits to replenish vitamins promptly and avoid wearing non-breathable footwear. We hope this information proves helpful.
