Introduction
Nodular acne is treated with topical medications, oral medications, and physical therapies. Also known as cystic acne, it results from inflammatory reactions associated with acne. Anti-inflammatory topical agents—such as fusidic acid cream, clindamycin gel, and erythromycin ointment—may be applied to the affected areas, alternated with benzoyl peroxide gel, to eradicate *Propionibacterium acnes*.

Acne is a relatively common skin condition in daily life. When it occurs, it may cause severe localized itching and significantly impact one’s quality of life. How is nodular acne treated?

How Is Nodular Acne Treated?

Nodular acne—also known as nodulocystic acne—is typically managed through topical medications, oral medications, and physical therapies. It arises from inflammatory reactions associated with acne. Anti-inflammatory topical agents such as fusidic acid cream, clindamycin gel, erythromycin ointment, and benzoyl peroxide gel may be applied alternately to the affected areas to suppress sebaceous gland secretion and eliminate Propionibacterium acnes. Patients should strictly avoid squeezing or picking at lesions, as this may exacerbate nodule formation and worsen inflammation.

In its early stages, nodular acne presents with complex symptoms and often involves deep-seated pustular inflammation, which may progressively evolve into thick-walled nodules. These nodules vary in size and appear purplish-red. The pathogenesis of nodular acne is multifactorial, closely linked to various contributing factors—including dietary habits, psychological stress, and poor nutrition. Keratinous debris and sebum accumulate within hair follicles, forming yellowish-white microcomedones that continually develop into visible comedones.

Daily skincare is essential: maintain clean, dry skin; avoid spicy, stimulating, and seafood-based foods, as these may aggravate the condition and impede skin recovery; ensure adequate sleep. We hope this information proves helpful!
