Worsening of tinnitus after waking up
Patients with tinnitus often experience a persistent buzzing or ringing sensation in their ears, significantly impairing daily life. Some patients notice that their tinnitus worsens upon waking in the morning. So, why does tinnitus intensify after awakening?
Worsening Tinnitus Upon Awakening
If tinnitus worsens upon waking, the first consideration should be whether overly abrupt or vigorous movements during rising cause transient cerebral hypoperfusion, leading to compromised inner ear circulation and exacerbation of tinnitus.

Another possible cause is turbinate hypertrophy. When nasal turbinates are enlarged, they may obstruct the pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian (auditory) tube during sleep. Upon waking, sudden opening of the Eustachian tube can trigger or intensify tinnitus. Additionally, cervical spondylosis—especially when combined with habitual unilateral sleeping—may impair blood circulation to the ear, worsening nocturnal or early-morning tinnitus. Furthermore, recent emotional stress, insomnia, or anxiety may elevate blood pressure upon awakening the following day, thereby aggravating tinnitus.

Therefore, patients are advised to maintain optimal mental well-being, avoid excessive psychological stress, ensure adequate rest during work, follow a balanced diet, and engage regularly in moderate physical exercise to enhance overall physical fitness and immune function—thereby reducing both the incidence and severity of tinnitus.
