Introduction
Dry heaving and nausea may be caused by gastroesophageal reflux. Reflux-induced dry heaving and vomiting are common conditions, primarily resulting from excessive exposure or contact of the esophagus with gastric contents, leading to clinical symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux. Some patients may also develop esophageal mucosal injury. Additionally, gastroesophageal reflux can manifest with extra-esophageal symptoms, such as cough, asthma, dry heaving, and vomiting.

Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms that reflect underlying disease processes in the human body. However, most people typically do not pay special attention to nausea or vomiting unless these symptoms severely impair their diet or daily functioning—only then do they seek medical treatment. So, what causes dry heaving or the sensation of wanting to vomit?

What Causes Dry Heaving or the Sensation of Wanting to Vomit?

Dry heaving or the urge to vomit may be caused by gastroesophageal reflux (GER). GER-related dry heaving and vomiting are relatively common conditions, primarily resulting from excessive exposure of the esophagus to gastric secretions. This exposure leads to clinical manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux. Some patients may develop esophageal mucosal injury. Moreover, GER can present with extra-esophageal symptoms—including chronic cough, asthma, dry heaving, and vomiting. In a minority of patients, cough or asthma may even be the initial or predominant symptom; these manifestations are associated with inflammation and spasm triggered by reflux-induced irritation of the esophageal mucosa.

For patients experiencing dry heaving or the urge to vomit, deep-breathing exercises often provide effective symptomatic relief. Generally, pharmacological therapy is first recommended to alleviate discomfort, followed by targeted treatment addressing the underlying cause. Performing cervical spine health exercises may also yield significant symptomatic improvement. If patients experience concurrent neck discomfort alongside nausea and vomiting, cervical spondylosis is frequently implicated; such exercises help relax neck muscles effectively, thereby alleviating symptoms. A low-fiber diet is highly beneficial for relieving nausea and vomiting caused by food retention, as it provides appropriate nutritional support while enhancing gastrointestinal digestive function.

If dry heaving or the urge to vomit stems from other diseases or neurological causes, targeted treatment under physician guidance is essential. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
