Painless Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: Instructions for Taking Simethicone
Simethicone is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and also serves as an adjunctive agent for abdominal imaging examinations. Administering simethicone prior to gastroscopy or colonoscopy enhances visualization of the gastrointestinal tract. For painless gastroscopy or colonoscopy, simethicone must be taken under a physician’s guidance, as follows:
1. Timing of administration: • If undergoing colonoscopy in the morning, take simethicone the evening before the procedure. • If undergoing colonoscopy in the afternoon, take simethicone on the morning of the procedure.

2. Route of administration: • For gastroscopy: Simethicone should be taken orally, followed by ingestion of 1,000–1,500 mL of water. • For colonoscopy: Simethicone may be administered rectally via enema.
Taking simethicone before gastroscopy helps reduce intraluminal foam and facilitates expulsion of intestinal gas. In addition, clinical practice commonly employs other bowel-cleansing agents—including magnesium sulfate, mannitol, and polyethylene glycol electrolyte powder—combined with copious oral hydration to optimize gastrointestinal preparation for endoscopic examination.
