Introduction
Patients may take a shower approximately three days after hemorrhoid surgery. Hemorrhoid surgery leaves a wound that requires daily disinfection and dressing changes with prescribed medications. Showering too early may increase the risk of bacterial infection at the surgical site, thereby impairing wound healing. On the second postoperative day, if flatus (passing gas) resumes from the anus, patients may begin eating light meals. Bowel movements typically occur after eating.

People may develop hemorrhoids—a condition that significantly impairs daily life and work—after exposure to cold or heat, constipation, diarrhea, excessive alcohol consumption, or eating spicy foods. When symptoms are mild, topical medications are often used to alleviate discomfort. However, if hemorrhoids recur frequently or become severe, surgical intervention is typically required. So, how soon after hemorrhoid surgery can one take a bath?

How Soon After Hemorrhoid Surgery Can One Bathe?

Bathing is generally permissible around three days post-surgery. Following hemorrhoid surgery, an open wound remains at the surgical site, requiring daily disinfection and dressing changes. Bathing too early risks bacterial infection of the wound, thereby delaying healing. On the second postoperative day, if flatus has resumed from the anus, patients may begin consuming light meals; bowel movements typically follow meals. After each bowel movement, gently cleanse the perianal area with warm water. On the third postoperative day, local sitz baths using traditional Chinese herbal decoctions with heat-clearing and detoxifying properties are recommended to promote wound healing—this is also an appropriate time to bathe. However, caution is advised: patients’ immune resistance remains low during this period, so bathwater temperature should not be excessively low to avoid chilling, which could impair wound healing.

In clinical practice, bathing may commence as early as the second or third day after hemorrhoid surgery. Most hemorrhoid surgeries are open procedures, resulting in a fresh surgical wound that is typically left unsutured. On the second or third postoperative day, patients are advised to perform warm sitz baths around the anal region, as this improves local microcirculation and helps maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the surgical wound. Therefore, bathing is considered safe on the second or third postoperative day.

Additionally, patients recovering from hemorrhoid surgery are advised to consume ample fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, shorten defecation time, and maintain regular, effortless bowel movements. They should avoid alcohol, late-night activities, excessive physical exertion, overconsumption of spicy foods, and prolonged squatting. We hope this information proves helpful.
