Why do I feel slightly nauseous upon waking up in the morning?
Most of the time, when I wake up in the morning, I feel nauseous and vomit—I assumed this was simply a normal morning reaction. However, upon learning more, I realized that others do not typically experience this. At this point, patients should pay special attention, as it may indicate an underlying medical condition. So, why do some people feel slightly nauseous upon waking?
Why Do Some People Feel Slightly Nauseous Upon Waking?
Morning nausea is commonly caused by gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, or conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, or pancreas. Symptoms like nausea and vomiting often appear shortly after waking. Gastrointestinal diseases are frequently accompanied by additional symptoms, including abdominal discomfort and indigestion. Secondly, during early pregnancy—especially in the morning—women commonly experience nausea and vomiting; this is a normal physiological response and a typical feature of pregnancy. In patients with pharyngitis, particularly chronic pharyngitis, nausea and dry heaving upon waking are characteristic symptoms. Regardless of the underlying cause of morning nausea, treatment should begin with identifying the root cause, followed by targeted symptom management.

Clinically, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting upon waking warrant careful evaluation. Initial considerations include viral gastroenteritis (“stomach flu”) or insufficient sleep and rest. Additionally, age and medical history must be taken into account for precise differential diagnosis. Other possible causes include elevated blood pressure, cerebral arteriosclerosis, or cerebrovascular disease. Therefore, we recommend first measuring blood pressure and body temperature. If abnormalities are detected, prompt medical consultation and appropriate medication are advised.

We recommend that patients increase their fluid intake and avoid greasy or spicy foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
