Why does eating green plums cause diarrhea?
Eating green plums and subsequently experiencing diarrhea may be related to factors such as inadequate washing of the plums, spleen-stomach deficiency, or pre-existing gastric disorders.
1. Inadequately washed green plums:
If green plums are not thoroughly washed before consumption, residual bacteria or pesticide residues on their skin may enter the gastrointestinal tract, potentially triggering diarrhea.
2. Spleen-stomach deficiency:
Green plums are considered a “cold” and “cooling” food in traditional Chinese medicine. They contain abundant organic acids and vitamin C, offering high nutritional value. However, individuals with weak spleen-stomach function may experience gastrointestinal irritation—and consequently diarrhea—when consuming excessive amounts.
3. Gastric disorders:
Individuals suffering from gastrointestinal dysfunction, gastric ulcers, or other gastric conditions often have compromised digestive resilience. Consuming green plums may thus provoke diarrhea and potentially exacerbate existing gastric discomfort.
If diarrhea occurs after eating green plums, mild cases may resolve spontaneously with adequate hydration and rest. However, if diarrhea is severe, medical consultation is advised; loperamide or smectite powder may be prescribed under a physician’s guidance for symptomatic relief.
