Can I drink alcohol after taking Yan Yan Pian?
Alcohol consumption is generally not recommended after taking Yan Yan Pian (Pharyngitis Tablets).
Yan Yan Pian is a traditional Chinese patent medicine composed of multiple herbal ingredients, including Scrophularia ningpoensis, Ophiopogon japonicus, and Rehmannia glutinosa. It functions to nourish yin, moisten the lungs, clear heat, detoxify, suppress coughing, and relieve throat itching. Clinically, it is used to treat symptoms associated with chronic pharyngitis—such as throat itching, dryness, and irritative cough. Alcohol should typically be avoided after taking Yan Yan Pian, as concurrent alcohol intake may reduce drug efficacy and impair therapeutic outcomes. Moreover, alcohol combined with this medication can irritate and damage the gastrointestinal mucosa, potentially causing epigastric pain, abdominal distension, and—in severe cases—gastric ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding. Additionally, drinking alcohol after taking Yan Yan Pian may increase the metabolic burden on the liver and kidneys, leading to hepatic or renal dysfunction, and may also exacerbate pharyngitis symptoms, thereby hindering recovery.
During treatment, patients should drink plenty of water, ensure adequate rest, avoid excessive vocal strain, and strictly abstain from smoking and alcohol. A diet free of spicy and irritating foods is also recommended to support recovery.
