Introduction
Commonly used thermometers for measuring body temperature include mercury thermometers, digital thermometers, and infrared thermometers. To use a mercury thermometer, shake it down to below 35°C, then place the bulb in the axilla (armpit) and hold it in place for 5 minutes. A digital thermometer typically requires only 3–5 seconds for measurement. Infrared thermometers—most commonly forehead (temporal) thermometers—are used by aiming the device at the forehead and pressing the activation button; the reading appears within approximately 5 seconds.

Mercury thermometers, digital thermometers, and infrared thermometers are commonly used to measure body temperature. How should these thermometers be used correctly? Specific instructions are as follows:

1. Mercury thermometer: Gently shake the thermometer until the mercury column falls below 35°C. Place it firmly in the axilla (armpit), ensuring the bulb is positioned at the apex of the axilla. Leave it in place for 5 minutes, then remove and read the temperature.

2. Digital thermometer: Before use, disinfect the thermometer’s probe tip with alcohol. Turn on the device; once a beep sounds, position the probe against the forehead or in the axilla. After 3–5 seconds, when a second beep sounds, the temperature reading will appear.

3. Infrared thermometer: The most commonly used infrared thermometer is the temporal (forehead) thermometer. Prior to each measurement, ensure a new, clean probe cover is in place. Press the power button and wait approximately 5 seconds to obtain the reading.

Note: After use, wipe the thermometer thoroughly with a 75% alcohol swab for disinfection before storing it, to prevent cross-contamination.
