Introduction
If facial frostbite causes immediate swelling and hyperemia, the affected area should generally be kept dry, and the patient should rest in bed; recovery typically occurs spontaneously within a few days. For second-degree frostbite, after disinfecting the affected area with 1% chlorobutyl rubber, dry, soft dressings may be applied for thermal insulation. In daily life, engage in moderate physical activity to promote blood circulation and avoid remaining stationary for prolonged periods in cold environments.

Frostbite is tissue damage—both local and systemic—caused by exposure to low temperatures. So, what should you do if your face is frostbitten?

What to Do for Facial Frostbite

If facial frostbite causes immediate swelling and hyperemia (increased blood flow), keep the affected area dry and rest in bed; recovery typically occurs spontaneously within several days. For recurrent frostbite, disinfect the area with 1% chlorobutyl rubber solution, then apply dry, soft dressings to retain warmth.

If blisters form, preserve their integrity. Large blisters require strict aseptic technique to prevent secondary infection. If infection is present, first apply antibacterial gauze, followed by frostbite ointment to promote epithelial regeneration. After recovery from facial frostbite, apply moisturizing cream multiple times daily to support both hydration and skin repair. Maintain warmth, engage in moderate physical activity regularly to enhance circulation, and avoid prolonged immobility in cold environments.

In daily life, upon noticing facial frostbite, promptly move indoors to a warm environment with room temperature maintained between 22°C and 25°C. Initially, gently massage the affected area with a soft cloth; alternatively, prepare a decoction using eggshells, cool it to a comfortable temperature, and repeatedly wash the frostbitten area until moisture sensation or numbness subsides. For areas with hardened tissue, apply “Hongling Jiu” (a traditional Chinese medicinal liquor) or a mixture of ginger juice and chili pepper tincture to improve blood and qi circulation.
