Introduction
Acute tonsillitis may develop due to acute inflammatory lesions in adjacent organs, such as rhinitis, acute pharyngitis, and stomatitis. Additionally, impaired immunity can predispose individuals to acute tonsillitis, as the body becomes more susceptible to various pathogenic bacteria; once these pathogens invade the tonsils, they are likely to trigger an acute inflammatory response.

Acute tonsillitis can severely damage the patient’s tonsils and may also adversely affect multiple organs and tissues throughout the body. So, what causes acute tonsillitis?

What Causes Acute Tonsillitis?

Acute tonsillitis may arise when adjacent organs develop acute inflammatory conditions—such as rhinitis, acute pharyngitis, or stomatitis. If these inflammatory diseases are not properly controlled or treated, the inflammation may spread to the tonsils, thereby triggering acute tonsillitis.

Reduced immunity may also predispose individuals to acute tonsillitis, rendering the body more susceptible to various pathogenic bacteria. Once such pathogens invade the tonsils, they can readily provoke an acute inflammatory response. Tobacco smoke and alcohol contain harmful substances that can abnormally irritate the tonsils; excessive irritation may lead to acute tonsillitis.

If left untreated, acute tonsillitis may progress and lead to various complications—including rheumatic fever, peritonsillar cellulitis, and acute glomerulonephritis. Therefore, patients should promptly undergo diagnostic evaluations, including throat swab culture, C-reactive protein (CRP) testing, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and complete blood count (CBC). Appropriate anti-infective therapy and symptomatic management are essential to mitigate the risks associated with acute tonsillitis. We hope this article has been helpful.
