Introduction
Nosebleeds in Children 1. Calm the child’s emotions—do not let the child feel frightened, as this helps stop the bleeding effectively and quickly. 2. During a nosebleed, first have the child sit quietly on a small stool with their head tilted slightly backward. This prevents blood from flowing down the throat; if blood enters the throat and reaches the stomach, it may cause nausea or vomiting. 3. If bleeding occurs from the left nostril, raise the right hand.

Nosebleeds are common in children; however, improper management can easily lead to excessive blood loss. Consequently, many parents panic when their child experiences a nosebleed. So, what should you do when your child has a nosebleed?

How to Manage a Child’s Nosebleed

1. Calm your child and reassure them to prevent fear—this helps achieve effective and rapid hemostasis.

2. During a nosebleed, first have your child sit quietly on a small stool with their head tilted slightly backward. This position prevents blood from flowing down the throat; if swallowed, blood may irritate the stomach and cause nausea or vomiting.

3. If bleeding originates from the left nostril, raise the child’s right hand. Raising the right hand promotes venous return and may assist in controlling the bleeding.

4. If both nostrils are bleeding, gently pinch the soft part of the nose (the nasal septum) with your fingers while instructing your child to breathe through their mouth. Maintain pressure for approximately 10 minutes—this usually stops the bleeding.

5. For light, intermittent bleeding (e.g., dripping), apply a cool, damp towel over the bridge of the nose. This helps constrict the small blood vessels in the nasal cavity and facilitates hemostasis.

Encourage your child to drink plenty of warm water regularly to keep the nasal mucosa moist. If nosebleeds occur frequently, consult a hematologist promptly for evaluation and appropriate treatment. Avoid spicy or highly stimulating foods in the child’s diet.

If bleeding persists despite home measures, seek immediate medical attention so a physician can intervene. Recurrent nosebleeds warrant thorough evaluation at a hospital. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
