Introduction
Tonsillitis with sore, swollen throat can be treated by steeping honeysuckle, dandelion, fat sea date (Sterculia lychnophora), honey, and lemon in hot water; this combination helps clear heat, detoxify, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. For tonsillitis accompanied by sore throat, drink plenty of water, minimize speaking, and avoid spicy or irritating foods. Treatment options include Huajian Min Throat Lozenges and Xigua Shuang Throat Lozenges, which may be used in conjunction with antibiotics and heat-clearing, detoxifying medications.

Recently, I developed tonsillitis accompanied by sore throat. A friend suggested visiting a hospital for evaluation; however, medical consultation would likely involve taking medication—and as the saying goes, “All medicines carry some degree of toxicity.” Therefore, I’d prefer to alleviate the pain without resorting to pharmaceuticals. So, how can one relieve sore throat and discomfort caused by tonsillitis?

How to Relieve Sore Throat and Discomfort from Tonsillitis

For tonsillitis with sore, swollen throat, consider preparing an herbal infusion using honeysuckle, dandelion, fat sea date (Sterculia lychnophora), honey, and lemon—this combination helps clear heat, detoxify, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. During episodes of tonsillitis-associated pharyngeal pain, drink plenty of water, minimize speaking, and avoid spicy or irritating foods. Over-the-counter lozenges such as Huajian Min Throat Lozenges or Watermelon Frost Throat Lozenges may be used. These can be combined with antibiotics or traditional Chinese medicines that clear heat and resolve toxins—for example, Chi Qiao Qingre Granules, Wangchuan Xiaoyan Capsules, Pudi Lan Xiaoyan Tablets, or cephalosporin antibiotics.

To prevent tonsillitis, first cultivate healthy lifestyle habits: ensure adequate sleep and avoid staying up late. Secondly, pay attention to weather changes and dress appropriately—adding or removing layers as needed—to prevent colds. Regular physical activity also helps strengthen immunity. Additionally, maintain good indoor ventilation and avoid consuming irritating foods. Lastly, drink ample water—it benefits overall health significantly.

Sore throat resulting from tonsillitis indicates the condition is in its acute inflammatory phase—commonly presenting as acute tonsillitis, acute suppurative tonsillitis, or even peritonsillar abscess. Primary treatment during the acute phase focuses on anti-inflammatory therapy, with conventional antibiotics being the first-line pharmacological option. We hope this information proves helpful!
